The Fungal Giant

created by Willoughby Arévalo & Isabelle Kirouac
in collaboration with students of École Norval-Morrisseau

The Fungal Giant – Living Sculpture is a collaboration between Isabelle Kirouac, Willoughby Arévalo, Musqueam elder, traditional knowledge keeper, natural dyer, weaver and educator Rita Kompst, and K-3 students and staff of École Norval-Morrisseau. Amongst many other embodied and experiential activities, students learned simple mushroom cultivation techniques, leading to the collaborative creation of a large-scale myceliated mushroom sculpture composed of many bundles of organic cotton cloth dyed with local fungi and inoculated with oyster mushroom mycelium. The sculpture fruited edible mushrooms, which we cooked and served to the students to celebrate our learning!

This project has been supported by ArtStarts Artists in the Classroom.
